  • Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

  • The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

  • If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

  • White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

  • All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

  • White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

  • Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Conditions:  Big swell after a few stormy days and periods of sunshine.

After a few very stormy days with very few days out at sea we were given a gap to go out to sea this afternoon to watch the Great White sharks. We informed everyone about the conditions before they booked to make sure they were comfortable with it. It is actually not dangerous at all but just a bit less comfortable depending on what you’re looking for. Everyone actually enjoyed the ride which was an extra to the shark sightings we got today. After getting on anchor we had to wait a bit for the first shark to show up but that is not unusual. It gave us the opportunity to answer questions that some people on the boat had. The first to sharks to show up were two juveniles not bigger than 3m. One of them was a male which was fairly easy to tell as he was showing off his caudal fin above water as you can see in the pictures. A bit later we were visited by a large female that we refer to as white tip. Note that this is a white shark but she has a white spot on the tip of her dorsal fin. We know her quite well and she is close to maturing at a length of 4m. Other noteworthy sightings apart from white sharks were short tail stingrays, white chinned petrels and an adult shy albatross.

If you are looking to get up close and personal with the great white shark then Great White Shark Cage Diving in Gansbaai, and more specifically with Marine Dynamics, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss.
